On Friday night, Dan, Danny and I went to see celtic punk band The Drop Kick Murphys. It was an amazing show. The band played its typical blend of hard core punk, combined with a combination of traditional Irish folk all with a touch of working class consciousness. The highlight for me was the ballad (Fields of Athenry) dedicated to their fallen friend, who was killed in Iraq. The band followed the ballad with its working class anthem, "The Workers Song". The band criticized the war while reminding the audience that it is always the poor who are sent off to fight in other people's wars. It was amazing to watch.
Following the show, we had a really interesting debate. The debate was more about Murphy fans and whether the music appeals to a working class group (building class consciousness?) or if it is more concerned with youth and anger? I think we all agreed that it was more or less both. In any event, it was a lot of fun and a kick ass concert…
